Employment Law Practice Areas

My practice is entirely in the field of employment law, and the majority of my clients are private sector employers. I also represent individuals in employment and severance negotiations. Some examples of the employment law matters I handle include

  • Comprehensive employment law compliance audits
  • Preparation of employee handbooks
  • Training and counseling employers in discrimination and harassment prevention
  • Representation of companies before the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and in state and federal courts
  • Defending employers against claims of sexual harassment
  • Defending claims arising from allegations of discrimination relating to age, gender, pregnancy, race, sexual orientation, disability, reasonable accommodation and military status
  • Defending wrongful termination allegations
  • Assisting employers with Age Discrimination in Employment Act claims
  • Counseling employers in compliance issues regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, and the Consolidated Omnibus and Budget Reorganization Act
  • Defending claims under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act
  • Negotiating and drafting severance agreements
  • Drafting confidentiality and non-compete agreements
  • Defending wage claims before state and federal agencies

My primary goal with my employer clients is to be proactive: Most claims can be easily avoided with awareness of and compliance with the law.  Employment law compliance audits quickly identify problem areas, which can then be corrected to avoid liabilities. To prevent possible claims, I also may suggest training of key personnel to increase awareness of legal requirements to avoid workplace claims.

Even with the best compliance efforts, claims sometimes arise and need to be defended. I have a demonstrated record of success in cases in many jurisdictions, as well as before a variety of federal and state administrative agencies. I counsel my clients to handle claims ethically and fairly, and to vigorously defend claims which are baseless.

Each case represents unique challenges. Some cases require prompt settlement, some cases are proper for mediation or arbitration. Other cases require litigation, and if necessary, trial in state or federal court, or before state or federal administrative agencies. My goal is to take the worry from my clients, and to allow my clients to continue with their businesses with as little disruption as possible.
